Stickers vs Trading Cards: Panini, Topps and Match Attax Explained

Panini stickers, Topps cards, Match Attax, Adrenalyn XL - if you are new to football collectables, or buying for a child who has just caught the bug, the names blur together. They are really two different hobbies: filling a sticker album, and collecting a set of trading cards. This guide explains the difference, who makes what, and which one suits which collector.

Sticker albums: fill every space

A sticker collection is built around an album. Every sticker has a numbered space, and the goal is to fill all of them. Once a sticker is stuck down, it stays there - the album is the finished product.

Panini is the name most people know for football sticker albums. The Panini FIFA World Cup 2026 album has 1,190 stickers across the 48 teams, the Panini Premier League 2024 album has 636, and the 2010 World Cup album - the tournament South Africa hosted - has 640.

Trading cards: collect, sort and play

Trading cards are kept loose, in a binder or a tin, not stuck into anything. That means they can be re-sorted, swapped and, in the case of trading card games, played with. Match Attax, made by Topps, is a football trading card game: each player card carries attack and defence numbers, and two players pick a team and battle card against card.

Panini makes a trading card game too - Adrenalyn XL. The Adrenalyn XL World Cup 2026 set has 631 cards. Topps, meanwhile, makes card sets beyond Match Attax, such as Topps Premier League 2026 and the Turbo Attax Formula 1 cards. So the simple rule "Panini is stickers, Topps is cards" is not quite right - Panini does both.

How numbering, subsets and foils work

Both hobbies use numbers as the backbone of the checklist, and both mix ordinary items with specials:

  • Base. The ordinary players, usually the bulk of the set. In Match Attax Champions League 2025/26, 255 of the 468 cards are base cards.
  • Subsets. Named groups with their own design, like Stat Stars and Captains in the Panini Premier League 2024 album, or Man of the Match and Cult Heroes in Match Attax 2015/16.
  • Foils and special finishes. Shiny stickers or cards, such as the 20 foils in Panini Premier League 2024 or the Turbo Chrome cards in Turbo Attax F1.
  • Chase cards. Small subsets that are hard to find, like the Match Attax 100 Club - eight cards in the 2025/26 Champions League set, five in 2015/16.

One tip applies everywhere: collect by number, not by name. A star player can appear several times in one set, once in the base and again in one or more subsets.

Why every set gets harder at the end

Stickers and cards share the same maths. If every item in a set of 100 were equally likely, you would need to open around 520 on average to get all 100. The first 80 take only about 160 of those. The last 20 take roughly 360, because by then almost everything you open is a double. Bigger sets, and scarcer specials, make the gap even wider. That is why swapping has always been part of the hobby - and why buying the last few as singles often makes sense.

Which suits which collector?

  • Young collectors. A sticker album gives a clear goal and a visible sense of progress with every page. Trading card games suit children who want to play as well as collect - the cards get used, not just stored.
  • Teenagers and casual fans. Card sets let you focus on your club or favourite drivers and ignore the rest, without leaving gaps in an album.
  • Adult completists. Either works, but plan for the endgame. Card sets with many subsets and chase cards take real patience; big sticker albums take volume. Older sets, like the 2010 World Cup album or Match Attax 2015/16, can only be finished with singles now.
