South Africa's supermarket collectables: Little Shop, Stikeez, Stickables and more

Every year or two, a South African supermarket hands out something small with your groceries and the whole country starts collecting: tiny grocery replicas, sticky plastic creatures, rugby cards, reusable stickers. This is a tour of the supermarket promotions we carry - what each one was, how these promotions generally work, and how parents can help a child finish a set after the promotion has ended.

How supermarket collectables work

The pattern is nearly always the same: spend a set amount and get a collectable free at the till, often only if you swipe the store's loyalty card. You do not choose which one you get. The promotion runs for a few weeks, often with a paid album, case or book to keep them in, and sometimes with swap days or a prize draw attached. When the stock runs out, it is over - no more are made.

That last point is why these sets are so frustrating to finish. Because every item is random, the first three-quarters of a set come quickly and the last few take far longer than all the rest. If every item were equally likely, completing a set of 24 would take about 91 draws on average, and a set of 46 about 203 - with most of that effort spent chasing the last 20%. Specials and golden versions are usually scarcer, which stretches the tail further.

Checkers Little Shop

Little Shop is Checkers' long-running promotion of miniature replicas of real grocery brands. For the 2025 round, which Checkers described as the fifth edition, Xtra Savings members got one mini per R200 spent, and there were 46 minis to collect, 4 of them specials. We carry three rounds:

Little Shop 2025 - 46 minis, including the Sixty60 Ride-On Bike, Absa, Standard Bank and Xtra Savings card specials.
Little Shop 3 (2022) - 24 minis, including a Sixty60 motorbike, an FNB card and an Xtra Savings card as specials.
Little Shop 2 (2017) - 30 minis in the original set. We only list the ones we have confirmed by name so far, such as Ouma Rusks, Zoo Biscuits and a mini YOU magazine, and add more as they come in.

Checkers Stickables

Stickables are the Checkers promotion running right now: 50 reusable stickers themed on brands in store, each with a special effect, plus an ultra-rare golden version of every one. Xtra Savings members get one Stickable for every R200 spent at Checkers, Checkers Hyper, Checkers Foods or on Sixty60, up to 10 per transaction, from 21 September to 8 November 2026 or while stocks last. Pick n Pay Stikeez and Collectaboks

Pick n Pay's first Stikeez, in 2015, were 24 little plastic figures that stick to flat surfaces and pop when pulled off, given out at one per R150 spent. A second series of 24, Creatures of the Deep, followed in 2016 with glitter, pearl and glow-in-the-dark specials. The original list is here.

In late 2025, Pick n Pay's Springbok Collectaboks swapped figures for rugby cards: 30 Springbok cards plus a limited gold Rassie Erasmus, one pack for every R500 spent in a single transaction, from 20 October to 30 November 2025.

Woolworths Freddies Farm

Woolworths joined in with Freddies Farm in 2022: 18 farmyard minis, led by Freddie the Farmer, with four shiny foil animals. At 18 it is the smallest set here, and a friendly one for younger children.

Tips for parents: finishing a set after the promotion

Start with a proper count. Tip everything out and tick each item off a numbered list. Children often have doubles of things they think are missing, and miss things hiding in a school bag.
Pool with family. Grandparents, cousins and neighbours shopped at the same store. One shared collection fills far faster than several separate ones.
Swap while it is still running. Doubles are easiest to trade during the promotion, when everyone is collecting. Afterwards, fewer people are looking.
Buy only the last few. Once you are down to a handful, buying exactly those beats any amount of extra shopping. We sell singles and deliver anywhere in South Africa to PUDO lockers.

Keep a clean set apart. If a child plays with the collection, set aside one of each for the case or album and let them play with the doubles.
