Match Attax England 2010: checklist, International Masters and 100 Club

Topps Match Attax England 2010 is the Match Attax edition built around the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Despite the name, it is not only England: the set features players and managers from across the tournament, plus a run of all-time greats. This guide covers its 343 cards, the chase cards, and how to finish it now that it is long out of print.

How Match Attax works

Match Attax is Topps' football trading card game. Every player card has an Attack and a Defence number, and a match is played in rounds: one player attacks with a card, the other defends with one, and if the attack number beats the defence number, it is a goal. So the cards were played with as well as collected - worth remembering when you judge the condition of a 2010 card today.

What is in the set

The checklist runs to 343 cards:

224 base cards - the squad players. You will find names from well beyond England here, such as Iker Casillas, Landon Donovan, Jeremy Toulalan and Waldo Ponce, alongside England regulars like Emile Heskey.
16 Managers - including Vicente del Bosque, whose Spain side went on to win the tournament.
28 Men of the Match and 25 Star Players - special player cards on top of the base set.
32 International Legends and 6 Star Legends.
8 International Masters - Franz Beckenbauer, Johan Cruyff, Eusebio, Diego Maradona, Bobby Moore, Pele, Zinedine Zidane and Dino Zoff.
4 100 Club cards.

The chase cards

The International Masters are the cards most collectors are hunting. Eight of the biggest names in football history, on one small subset, in a set that has been out of the shops for years - in the collections we buy, they turn up far less often than anything else in the set. The four 100 Club cards are also among the harder cards to find. The 224 base cards are the easy part.

What finishing 343 cards takes

If every one of the 343 cards were equally likely, you would expect to open about 2,200 cards to see them all. The first 274 different cards - about 80% of the set - would take only around 550 of those. The last 69 would take roughly 1,650. And because the Masters and 100 Club cards are much scarcer than a base card, the real number is higher still.

With no new packets being made, the realistic plan is to work out exactly which numbers you are missing and fill them one by one.

Tips for collectors

Check condition before you pay. For a 2010 card, look at the corners, the edges and the surface. A card that spent a season in a school bag being played with will show it, and creases do not come out.
Sleeve the legends. The Masters, Star Legends and 100 Club cards are the ones worth protecting. Put them in sleeves, then in a binder or a top-loader, and keep them out of the sun.
Collect by type. Finishing the 8 Masters or the 32 International Legends as a mini-set is satisfying in its own right, even before the full 343 is done.
