Match Attax 2009/10 Premier League: full card list, 100 Club and how to complete it

Topps Match Attax 2009/10 is the Premier League set from the season just before the World Cup came to South Africa. It has 444 cards across the 20 clubs of that season, and plenty of collectors remember swapping it at school. This guide covers what is in it, which cards are the hard ones, and how to finish it today.

How Match Attax works

Match Attax is Topps' football trading card game. Each player card has an Attack and a Defence number. In a match, one player attacks with a card and the other defends with one; if the attack beats the defence, it is a goal. So these cards were played with as much as they were collected, which is worth bearing in mind when you judge the condition of one today.

What is in the set

The 2009/10 checklist runs to 444 cards:

320 base cards - the squad players, an average of 16 per club.
20 Managers - as many as there are clubs.
60 Men of the Match - special player cards on top of the base set, such as Gael Clichy, Andrey Arshavin, Theo Walcott and Curtis Davies.
40 Live Codes
4 100 Club cards - Edwin van der Sar, John Terry, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

The squads are a snapshot of a season many fans remember well, with names like Pepe Reina, Glen Johnson, Emmanuel Adebayor and John Utaka all in the base set. Every card is on our Match Attax 2009/10 checklist.

The hard cards

The four 100 Club cards are the chase cards of this set. In the collections we buy they turn up far less often than anything else. The Men of the Match are the next step up: much more common than the 100 Club, but still scarcer than the base cards, and with 60 of them they are usually where a collection stalls.

Base cards and managers are the easy part. If you are missing mostly base cards, you are closer to the end than it feels.

What finishing 444 cards takes

If every one of the 444 cards were equally likely, you would expect to open about 2,960 cards before you had all of them. The first 355 different cards - 80% of the set - would take only around 710 of those. The last 89 would take roughly 2,250, because by then nearly every card you open is a double.

That is why swapping mattered so much at the time. Today there are no new packets to open, so the maths points one way: list your gaps and fill them directly.

Finishing the set today

Sort by club. Lay the cards out club by club - base cards, then the manager - and note every gap. It is the quickest way to see what is missing.

Check condition. For a card that is more than fifteen years old, look at the corners and edges, check for creases, and look at the surface in the light for scratches. A soft corner is normal for a played card; a crease is not something you can fix.
Store them properly. Keep finished sets in a binder with pocket pages, or sleeve the best cards. Keep them flat, dry and out of the sun.
