How to Store Stickers and Trading Cards So They Keep Their Value

A sticker or trading card is only worth what its condition allows. The same card can be a prized single or a worthless scrap depending on a bent corner or a water mark. The good news is that keeping a collection in top condition is cheap and simple - it mostly comes down to keeping things flat, dry, covered and out of the sun.

Why condition matters so much

Collectors pay for the best copy they can find. That is why we, like most dealers, pay very differently for the same item depending on its grade: a Mint item earns the full offer, while one that is Played - heavily creased, written on or stuck down - earns only a tenth of it. A single crease can drop a card two grades. Most of that damage is avoidable.

Trading cards: sleeves, toploaders and binders

Penny sleeves first. These thin, soft plastic sleeves cost very little and stop scratches and fingerprints. Slide the card in gently, top edge first.
Toploaders for the good ones. A toploader is a rigid plastic holder. Put the card in a penny sleeve first, then into the toploader. Use them for rares, foils and anything you would be upset to see bent.
Binders with the right pages. For a full set, a binder with 9-pocket pages lets you see everything at a glance. Choose pages labelled acid-free and PVC-free: older PVC plastic can give off chemicals over time that damage cards. Side-loading pages hold cards more securely than top-loading ones.
Do not overfill. One card per pocket. Squeezing two in stretches the pocket and bends the cards.
Store binders upright like books on a shelf, not in a stack with heavy things on top.

Stickers: keep them on the backing

A sticker is at its most valuable before it is stuck. Once peeled, it cannot go back on its backing in the same condition, and a sticker stuck into an album cannot be sold as a single. So:

Only stick the ones you are keeping. Stick one of each into your album and leave every double on its backing.
Store spares flat. Curling and bending are the main enemies. Keep them in an envelope or a small box, or between two sheets of stiff card.
Sort by number. Small bags or envelopes labelled by number range make swapping and selling much quicker, and you handle each sticker less.
Keep multi-sticker backings whole. Where two or three stickers share one backing and one number, do not cut them apart.
Protect the album too. Keep a finished album closed, flat and dry. A plastic book cover helps if it gets handled a lot.

Minis and small collectables

Supermarket minis and figures are sturdier than paper, but they scuff and their small parts snap off. A craft organiser box with small compartments keeps each one separate, so they do not rub against each other. Keep any original packaging if you have it.

The enemies: sun, damp, heat and hands

Sunlight fades printing and foils. Never display a collection on a sunny windowsill.
Damp warps cards and makes stickers stick where they should not. Avoid garages, outside rooms and cupboards against an outside wall. In humid coastal areas, a sealed plastic box is worth it.
Heat can soften sticker adhesive and curl cards. Keep collections out of hot cars and away from heaters.
Handling - clean, dry hands only, and hold cards by the edges. Keep food and drinks well away.
Elastic bands dent the top and bottom card of every stack. Use a box instead.

Moving and posting your collection

A simple setup for a young collector

For children, keep it easy: one album for the stickers they have stuck, one labelled envelope or box for doubles, and a few sleeves for favourite cards.
