Checkers Little Shop 3 (2022): all 24 minis and how to finish the set

Checkers Little Shop 3 was the 2022 round of the Checkers minis: 24 tiny replicas of South African grocery and household brands, three of them specials. It has been out of the shops for years, which makes it one of the harder Little Shop sets to finish today. Here is what was in it and how to track down the ones you are missing.

How Little Shop 3 was collected

The promotion started on 25 July 2022. Xtra Savings members got one mini for every R200 spent at Checkers, Checkers Hyper, Checkers Foods or on the Sixty60 delivery app, and you did not get to choose which mini you received. Checkers said the minis were made from 100% recycled plastics and the packaging from responsibly sourced cardboard and paper.

The 24 minis, including 3 specials

Twenty-one of the minis are everyday products - the pantry, drinks, fresh food and household brands you would find on a Checkers shelf. They include Spaghetti Bolognese, Beyers Caramel Dream Bear, HTH Granular Chlorine, Energizer Ultimate Lithium Batteries, Lindt Lindor Milk Chocolate, Forage and Feast Extra Virgin Olive Oil, aQuelle Natural Spring Water, Maggi 2 Minute Noodles, Oros Orange Squash and Huggies Gold Nappies.

The three specials are:

#15 Sixty60 Motorbike - the bright teal delivery bike that was new to Little Shop this round, and the mini we see least often.

Why the last few were always the hard part

If all 24 minis were equally likely, you would expect to open about 91 minis to collect every one - roughly R18,000 of shopping at one mini per R200. The first 19 different minis (80% of the set) take only about 36 of those. The last 5 take around 55 more, because by then nearly every mini is a double. In our experience the specials turn up less often than the grocery minis, so in practice the tail is longer still.

That is the maths behind the familiar story of a case stuck a few short of 24 when the promotion ended - and still sitting in a cupboard years later.

Finishing the set now

Check the whole house. Minis wander: toy boxes, car cubbyholes, the bottom of school bags. Tick off what you find against the checklist before buying anything.
Watch for the other rounds. Checkers has run several Little Shop promotions, and some brands appear in more than one. A mini from a different year looks similar but is not the same item - check the number and the design against the Little Shop 3 list.

Keeping an older set in good shape

After a few years of play, the printed labels on some minis fade or scuff. When you are choosing which copy to keep in the case, keep the cleanest one and let the others go. Store the case out of the sun and away from heat, and keep the three specials together so they do not get separated from the rest.
