Adrenalyn XL World Cup 2026 guide: card types, rare cards and completing the set

Panini Adrenalyn XL FIFA World Cup 2026 is the trading-card side of the World Cup: 631 cards you can play with as well as collect, each one carrying a player's attack and defence ratings. This guide explains the card types, which ones are rare, and what completing the set involves.

What is in the set

Most of the checklist is made up of the base cards - 414 of them - covering the players of the teams in the set. Around them sit the special cards that make Adrenalyn worth collecting:

• Team Crests - 42 cards.
• Icons and Fan Favourites - 42 of each, the best-known players in every squad.
• Goal Machines (22), Midfield Maestros (18), Defensive Rocks (9) and Top Keepers (9) - the stand-outs in each position.
• Master Rookies - 16 of the young players to watch.
• Golden Ballers - 9 cards, the ones every collector is chasing.
• A handful of Mascot and Eternos cards, plus a digital pack card.

Packets and prices in South Africa

A packet holds 8 cards. In September 2026 we found them at R42.50 on Amazon.co.za, R49 at Level Up and R59.90 at Toys R Us - so it pays to shop around, especially if you are buying a box of packets rather than one at a time.

What it takes to finish

If every card were equally likely, you would need to open around 4,400 cards - about 550 packets - to collect all 631. At R42.50 a packet that is more than R23,000. It is worse in practice, because the special cards are scarcer than the base cards and the Golden Ballers are scarcest of all.

The first 80% of the set comes surprisingly fast - roughly 1,000 cards. The last 20% takes around 3,400, because almost every packet by then is doubles. That is the point at which swapping and buying singles makes far more sense than buying more packets.

Playing as well as collecting

Adrenalyn XL is designed to be played: two players pick a team of cards and compare attack against defence. If you play, the high-rated special cards matter more than the base cards, and a playable team does not need the whole set - so a player and a collector can often swap to both sides' advantage.

Tips

• Sleeve the specials. Golden Ballers and the other special cards are worth keeping in penny sleeves - a bent corner takes most of the value off a card.
• Swap base cards in bulk. Base doubles are plentiful; trade them in stacks, and save the one-for-one swaps for special cards.
• Buy the gaps. When you are down to a few dozen, buying exactly those singles is far cheaper than another box.
